15 January 2009: In a speech delivered at the Ministerial Conference on Global Environment and Energy in Transport, which took place in Tokyo, Japan, from 14-16 January 2009, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, stressed that a global deal on transport and climate change should be an integral part of the UNFCCC process.

He underlined that the meeting provided an “ideal forum for building consensus among the 23 countries represented,” and noted that the sector will undoubtedly come under intense pressure and will have to “dramatically change direction.” He called on transport industries to drive economic growth through the production of “smart and efficient cars, trains, ships and planes.” [The Speech]
