unesco-wmo27 November 2013: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have signed an agreement reaffirming their long-term cooperation in the field of hydrology and water resources.

The agreement was signed on 25 November 2013, at the UN Headquarters in New York, US, by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud. It recognizes the need for the two organizations to cooperate in water sciences and water resources.

According to UNESCO, the two organizations have had one of the longest partnerships in the UN system, with the first agreement signed in 1954, and both have the oldest programmes in the field of hydrology in the UN.

Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Bokova indicated that it will strengthen the “collaboration between UNESCO and WMO in the areas of freshwater, ocean and climate change.” [UNESCO Press Release]
