15 September 2011: The Bureau of the Global Network of National Geoparks is examining 16 sites for potential admission. To qualify as a geopark, the site must present important geological heritage, and have a sound management structure and economic development strategy, with particular emphasis on sustainable tourism, according to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Network, which was established by UNESCO, currently includes 78 geoparks in 26 countries. Examples of current sites are an ancient rock formation in Malaysia, a petrified forest in Greece, and volcanic craters in Germany.

The Network’s Bureau is meeting from 16-18 September 2011, in Norway, to consider the new applications. A team of experts appointed by UNESCO visits each site that has applied for geopark status to determine if it meets the criteria. [UN News Centre Story] [UNESCO Press Release]
