UNESCO Organizes REDBIOS’ Ninth Meeting

Meeting participants discussed the role of the REDBIOS network through sharing activities and experiences in the biosphere reserve, and analyzed the mission of the biosphere reserve in relation to environmental development, the green economy and cultural diversity.

7 February 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) co-organized the ninth meeting of REDBIOS (Network of Biosphere Reserves of the East Atlantic and Macronesia) in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain, from 25-28 January 2011. The report of the meeting was released (in Spanish only) on 7 February 2011.

The meeting brought together government representatives and stakeholders from the country and biosphere reserves. Participants discussed the role of the REDBIOS network through sharing activities and experiences in biosphere reserves. They analyzed the mission of the biosphere reserve in relation to environmental development, the green economy and cultural diversity.

The REDBIOS Network is an inter-regional network – linking the European, Arab and African regions – that comprises the Canary Islands (Spain), Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Madeira and Azores (Portugal), Morocco and Senegal . The Network aims to enable countries from the Macronesian region to cooperate and exchange their experiences in biosphere reserves.

The January meeting was the first event to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Programme on Man and the Biosphere (MAB). [UNESCO Press Release] [Meeting Report (in Spanish)]
