UNESCO, Japan Renew International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management

The Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Educational Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, and the Ambassador of Japan to UNESCO, Isao Kiso, signed an agreement for the renewal of the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM), at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

UNESCO23 July 2013: The Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Educational Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, and the Ambassador of Japan to UNESCO, Isao Kiso, have signed an agreement for the renewal of the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM), at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

The agreement, which entered into force upon its signature, grants ICHARM the status of an international centre under the auspices of UNESCO for a second six-year term. Since it s creation in 2006, ICHARM has contributed to the activities of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP), especially in the area of flood risk mapping and risk management.

It engages in training and capacity building activities jointly with other UNESCO centres in Southeast Asia and in other regions. [UNESCO Press Release]
