UNESCO-IHE17 July 2014: A public-private-partnership of Dutch, Kenyan and German partners to develop and conserve the Mara River Basin, the Mau Mara Serengeti (MaMaSe) Sustainable Water Initiative, was launched to support “water-wise” sustainable economic development and biodiversity conservation in the Mara-Serengeti in Kenya.

The consortium, led by UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE), in cooperation with WWF Kenya, the Netherlands Embassy in Keya, HSBC Bank, and local partners such as the Kenyan Water Resources Management Authority (WMRA), aims to enable farmers in basin headwaters to produce water-wise products, assist rangeland communities to improve rangeland management and establish eco-tourism enterprises, and develop financing mechanisms for water resources management.

The programme, designed to last four years, will invest EUR10.7 million in both development and conservation of the Mara River ecosystem. [UNESCO-IHE Press Release]
