UNESCO has announced the official launch of the UNESCO Chair at the Beijing Institute of Technology and the China Science and Technology Exchange Centre.
The Chair will contribute to achieving the goals outlined in the Applicable Technology Manual (2nd Edition): South-South Cooperation on Science and Technology to Address Climate Change.
10 April 2012: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the official launch of the UNESCO Chair at the Beijing Institute of Technology and the China Science and Technology Exchange Centre. The Chair aims to promote knowledge dissemination, technology development and transfer, and information sharing among developing countries on applicable technology for climate change.
The creation of the Chair follows up on efforts by UNESCO and the China Science and Technology Exchange Centre, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of China, in developing and testing the Applicable Technology Manual (2nd Edition): South-South Cooperation on Science and Technology to Address Climate Change, which was officially launched during the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 17) in Durban, South Africa, at the end of 2011. The two bodies are also developing a Network/Platform for International Science and Technology Cooperation: Address Climate Change and Achieve Sustainable Development.
According to UNESCO, the Chair will contribute to achieving the goals outlined in the manual and disseminate the associated technology. The launch ceremony, which took place on 5 April 2012, was attended by representatives from UNESCO, the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
