UNESCO, CBD Launch UN Decade on Biodiversity

The launch event of the UN Decade on Biodiversity coincided with the launch of the UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative, which aims to contribute to the implementation of the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

Throughout the UN Decade, governments are encouraged to develop, implement and communicate the results of national strategies for implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.

UNESCO14 November 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) launched the UN Decade on Biodiversity, which aims to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and promote its overall vision of living in harmony with nature.

The launch event at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, took place in conjunction with the 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference and coincided with the launch of the UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative, which also aims to contribute to the implementation of the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity 2011-2020, as well as its Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

Throughout the UN Decade, governments are encouraged to develop, implement and communicate the results of national strategies for implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. A global event for the Decade will be held in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, from 17-19 December 2011.
