7 May 2009: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) has released a study on sustainable agriculture and food security in Asia and the Pacific.

The study emphasizes that the region’s food system has become increasingly fragile and that food security is being threatened by many factors, including unsustainable agricultural methods that are degrading the soil, water quality and biological diversity – challenges that will be exacerbated by climate change. The study examines: the roots of the 2008 food price crisis, including climate change and disasters; the threats to sustainable agriculture, including climate change and biofuels production; the resilience of communities, including through adaptation to climate variability; and an agenda for food security that includes adaptation to climate change as a long-term measure.
