7 December 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that the en.Lighten initiative, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has set a target of 2016 for the global phase-out of incandescent lamps.
UNEP and GEF made the announcement in the sidelines of the Durban Climate Change Conference.
According to UNEP, this is the first step in the transition to more efficient lighting and a low-carbon, resource-efficient green economy. UNEP notes that phasing-out inefficient lighting represents one of the easiest short-term initiatives to combat climate change and to save money.
