10 April 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) held a workshop on “Sharing Lessons in Africa on Climate Change Adaptation.” Participants shared knowledge and exchanged ideas on common climate change risks, built on lessons learned from projects across Africa, formulated common solutions in support of national policy processes and identified best practices for delivering adaptation solutions.

The workshop concluded with agreement on a series of recommendations to improve the capacity of communities, governments and other organizations to undertake and support adaptation projects. In particular, participants called: on African Governments to make budget allocations for the implementation of climate change adaptation interventions; on the Climate Change Adaptation and Development (CC DARE) Initiative and other development partners to widen their scope and intervene in areas such as curriculum development, climate research and innovation; for best practices and approaches in climate change adaptation to be packaged and communicated to partners; and for the CC-DARE model to be replicated in the designing of bigger adaptation projects in order to bring effective and efficient results.

The event, organized in Nairobi, Kenya, under CC DARE Initiative, gathered around 120 representatives from 20 African countries, NGOs, UN Agencies and other organizations.

The CC DARE Initiative jointly implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), with funding from the Danish Government, supports countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and small island developing States (SIDS) to remove barriers and create opportunities for integrating climate change adaptation into national development plans.
