UNEP to Provide Environmental Management Training to Peacekeepers

According to UNEP, the training programme aims to disseminate environmental good practice to all missions, and to encourage investments in new technologies, practices and behaviours that can reduce the overall environmental footprint of peacekeeping.

The e-learning course is expected to be delivered to thousands of military, police and civilian peacekeeping troops over the coming year.

UNEP21 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced the launch of a training programme to support the UN’s 16 peace operations in improving their management of the environment and natural resources. The training programme was developed with the technical assistance of the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

According to UNEP, the training programme aims to disseminate environmental good practice to all missions, and to encourage investments in new technologies, practices and behaviours that can reduce the overall environmental footprint of peacekeeping. The e-learning course is expected to be delivered to thousands of military, police and civilian peacekeeping troops over the coming year.

The launch also marked the 20th anniversary of International Peace Day, being commemorated under the theme “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future.” The initiative is part of efforts to establish the UN as a role model for sustainable practices. [UN Press Release] [UNEP Press Release]
