UNEP Seeking “Champions of the Earth”

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking candidates for the "Champions of the Earth" award with achievements linked to the outcomes of Stockholm in 1972, Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and individuals and organizations providing leadership on UNCSD's two themes.

1 September 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that nominations are now open for the 2012 “Champions of the Earth” award, which recognizes visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy, science, entrepreneurship and civil society action.

As the 2012 award ceremony will take place during the lead-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), UNEP is seeking candidates with achievements linked to the outcomes of Stockholm in 1972, and Rio de Janeiro in 1992, as well as individuals and organizations providing leadership on Rio+20’s themes of green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and an institutional framework for sustainable development.

Awardees will be selected for each of the following categories: policy, leadership, science and innovation, entrepreneurial vision, and inspiration and action. Nominations will be accepted until 31 October 2011. [Champions of the Earth Award website] [UNEP Press Release]
