UNEP SEED Symposium Highlights Role of Grassroots Entrepreneurs in the Green Economy

UNEP convened the SEED Symposium, which examined the prospects for transitioning to a Green Economy in Africa, looking specifically at the role of local entrepreneurs in promoting solutions that address climate change and energy, as well as agriculture and food security.

29 March 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) convened the SEED Symposium, which aimed to provide a platform to explore the potential contribution that small, medium and micro enterprises can make to the Green Economy, and to showcase the 2011 SEED award winners.

The Symposium, which took place on 29 March 2012, in Pretoria, South Africa, brought together representatives from UN organizations, the South African Government, the private sector, civil society and academia. Participants examined the prospects for transitioning to a Green Economy in Africa, looking specifically at the role of local entrepreneurs in promoting solutions that address climate change and energy, and agriculture and food security.

The event was part of the SEED Initiative’s efforts and was supported by the EU. The Symposium also marked the establishment of SEED South Africa, which will be officially launched in October 2012, and will be hosted buy the Independent Development Trust (IDT).
