The 2013 Champions of the Earth Awards will recognize leaders in the categories of: policy; leadership; science and innovation; entrepreneurial vision; and inspiration and action.
Winners will be announced at an award ceremony in May 2013, in New York, US.
23 October 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened nominations for the 2013 Champions of the Earth Award, the UN’s flagship environment award. The Award recognizes outstanding visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy, science, entrepreneurship and civil society action, and aims to inspire transformative action.
According to UNEP, the prize seeks to honor people who have had a positive impact on environmental protection while pursuing sustainable growth, such as by helping to improve the management of natural resources, promoting the shift to a green economy, demonstrating new ways to raise awareness of emerging environmental challenges, and bringing sustainable development to the under-served communities through grassroots initiatives.
