UNEP GreenUp Campaign Challenges Europeans to Reduce Water Use
story highlights

UNEP9 March 2012: The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) GreenUp campaign, organized by UNEP’s Regional Office for Europe, is challenging residents in European cities and elsewhere to reduce water use throughout March.

According to UNEP, global water use is growing at unsustainable rates, and it is predicted that by 2025, 1,800 million people will be living in countries with absolute water scarcity. To promote awareness of the issue of water scarcity, GreenUp is encouraging people to reduce their shower time to the length of their favourite song, noting that if a shower lasts close to 10 minutes, 160 liters of water has already probably been consumed, which is around 8 times more than the average amount of water that is available to most people in water-scarce regions.

The GreenUp campaign aims to raise awareness on the green economy ahead of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), by linking the 10 sectors of the UNEP Green Economy report and to people’s everyday lives and encouraging individual actions towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient future.
