7 May 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Green Cross International and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) granted five inaugural Green Star Awards in Brussels, Belgium, on 7 May 2009. The Awards recognize the efforts of leaders who contribute to the stability of post-crisis societies.

According to Alexander Likhotal, President of Green Cross International, “due to climate change and the increased frequency and severity of such disasters, it is important that the world becomes aware of environmental emergencies.” Also speaking at the awards ceremony, Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, underlined the need to address climate change and unsustainable patterns of development, stressing the link between environmental degradation and tensions that evolve into conflicts.
