UNEP, GEF Guidebook Outlines Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation in Building Sector
story highlights

The guidebook provides examples of how the building sector may decrease its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while sustaining the quality of services it provides to occupants.

Through this approach, it indicates, in addition to increasing public awareness and education, the building sector can mitigate the effects of climate change and promote sustainable development, especially in the context of developing countries.

August 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have published a guidebook on mitigation technologies and practices in the building sector, with examples of the use of solar energy, energy efficient building materials, and urban planning for storm water management.

Such a “green building” approach helps reduce negative effects of climate change, and also may create jobs and increase the potential for the development of a green economy.

Part of a technical guidebook series, the “Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation – Building Sector,” was written by Wynn Chi-Nguyen Cam, and provides descriptions of the mitigation technologies and practices in the building sector that are the foundation for countries to carry out Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs) and develop Technology Action Plans (TAPs) for climate change mitigation.

The guidebook provides examples of how the building sector may decrease its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while sustaining the quality of services it provides to occupants. The technologies and practices exemplified in the guidebook include setting up supporting policies, capacity building, ease of creating market demand, and the possibility for South-South transfer. This approach, in addition to increased public awareness and education, positions the building sector to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote sustainable development, especially in the context of developing countries.
