UNEP FI10 April 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Finance Initiative (FI) has announced that Africa’ largest insurer, Santum, has been awarded the 2012 Climate Change Leadership Award, under the financial services category. According to UNEP FI, the Award is the first of its kind in Africa to recognize businesses, communities, youth, schools and individuals who are leading the way in combating climate change.

UNEP FI reports that Santam won the award in recognition of the research study titled “Insurance in a Changing Risk Landscape: Local lessons from the Southern Cape of South Africa,” which offers a snapshot of the challenges borne out of a quickly evolving local risk horizon, using examples from South Africa’s Southern Cape Province. The study emerged from a research partnership between the SantamGroup, WWF, the University of Cape Town, and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and was produced in collaboration with UNEP FI. The report presents key insights from a local study and the additional global perspective from the UNEP FI, showing how insurers can help build climate and disaster-resilient communities.
