19 March 2010: Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, addressed the Pan Africa Media Conference on 19 March 2010, in Nairobi Kenya, and spoke about climate change, among other environmental issues.

Underlining that climate change is “perhaps the most over-arching and high profile challenge of all,” he stressed that it “goes to the heart of the global economy and the foundations upon which it has been built: namely energy.” Reflecting on the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference of December 2009, he stated that it was not a “big breakdown” and that the Copenhagen Accord contains elements of “a truly cooperative deal.” Steiner added that, although the pledges received since Copenhagen fall short of what is needed to keep global temperatures below two degrees Celsius by 2050, they constitute a “foundation upon which we can build.” He concluded by emphasizing the opportunities presented by the climate change challenge, highlighting the launch by UNEP of its Global Green New Deal/Green Economy initiative.
