31 August 2008: Achim Steiner, UN Environment Programme
(UNEP) Executive Director and UN Under-Secretary General, spoke to the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on 31 August 2008.

Focusing on
the significance of the IPCC’s 20th Anniversary, he emphasized the catalyzing
role of the IPCC’s findings in moving climate change to the center of the UN’s
mandate. He went on to encourage governments to “find their own courage,
tenacity and collective will to rise above their differences …” and translate
the findings of the IPCC, which he characterized as an “imperative,” into
political action. [Text
