4 August 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) have been awarded UN 21 Awards for Climate Neutrality. The annual UN 21 Awards recognize outstanding initiatives by UN teams or staff to improve the delivery of the UN’s programmes and promotion of UN values.
DFS was honoured for creating the UN Greenhouse Gas (GHG) calculator, which has now been rolled out to the whole UN system to develop GHG inventories. According to UN Greening the Blue, DFS also instituted the procurement of more efficient generators as well as a Photovoltaic/Diesel Hybrid power supply system, to reduce fuel consumption in field operations. In a related initiative, the Transportation and Movement Integrated Control Centre (TMICC) in Entebbe, Uganda, is expected to reduce approximately 11 percent of aviation emissions by optimizing flight planning at a regional level.
UNEP was recognized for its continuing efforts to advance sustainability initiatives across the UN system. UNEP has been climate neutral since 2008, and was the first UN organization to publish an Emission Reduction Strategy that included the goal of reducing emissions by 3 percent per annum in 2010-12 (from 2009 levels). UNEP also is coordinating the publication of the total GHG emissions for 52 UN institutions, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the UN’s carbon footprint. [UN Greening the Blue Press Release]
