UNEP Convenes Symposium on Illegal Trade

The symposium aimed to assess the need and means for capacity building to facilitate greater involvement and integration of the judiciary and prosecutors in tackling the illegal trade in ODS and other environmentally sensitive commodities.

Participants shared experiences in addressing illegal trade at the national level, and agreed on a list of practical recommendations to be taken up by UNEP and its partners to address illegal trade.

July 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) OzonAction Branch convened a symposium on addressing smuggling of ozone depleting substance (ODS), which aimed to assess the need and means for capacity building to facilitate greater involvement and integration of the judiciary and prosecutors in tackling the illegal trade in ODS and other environmentally sensitive commodities.

The symposium, which took place in Paris, France, from 9-10 June 2011, brought together Supreme and High Court Judges from developing countries, prosecutors from the US and Europe, and other experts. Participants shared experiences in addressing illegal trade at the national level, and agreed on a list of practical recommendations to be taken up by UNEP and its partners to plan future activities and potential synergies in addressing illegal trade in ODS and other commodities by the enforcement community.
