The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Swedish Government co-hosted a climate change conference on 11 November 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya, to raise awareness of the implications of climate change for Kenya’s economy and vulnerable groups.

With a population of one billion people and an area covering over 30 million square kilometres, Africa requires varied and complex solutions to climate change. But the question of how to adapt and build a sustainable green economy for the future is the common challenge for developing countries including Kenya. The conference focused on the hope of African countries for an inclusive, fair and effective outcome in the Copenhagen climate negotiations that prioritizes adaptation and recognizes that the continent has an urgent need for support.
