UNEP Announces Young Environmental Leader Awardees

25 October 2011: UN Environment Programme Executive (UNEP) has announced the recipients of the 2011 Young Environmental Leader Awards. Young leaders from Indonesia, Ecuador, Kenya and the Philippines were honored for environmental innovations.

Innovations included: the development of a small bioreactor that processes household waste to make renewable energy and an alternative fuel source; the design of a process to remove mercury from wastewater; the implementation of a green energy project using clean fuel briquettes made of foliage and waste paper; and an environmental education programme for children with special needs that includes art therapy sessions.

Recipients receive €3,000 and technical support in their home countries to help sustain their projects. Award recipients were announced on the final day of the UNEP-Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme, a week-long programme bringing together 47 young leaders from developing countries.
