12 May 2009: The winners of the 2009 SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development were announced at an event in conjunction with the 17th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), convening in New York, US. The SEED Award is the flagship programme of the SEED Initiative, a partnership founded by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and IUCN.
The international award recognizes innovation in local, environmentally-responsible and sustainable entrepreneurship. The 20 winning local initiatives include: a carbon bank and village development in Thailand; a solar energy, education and fishing project in Sri Lanka; a solar conversion of traditional kerosene hurricane lamps project in Bangladesh; a “Nafore and Afrisolar energy kiosks” project in Burkina Faso; and a clean energy initiative in Mozambique.
