UNEP and the Russian Federation Partner on Green Economy

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that it has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation, covering priority environmental areas including: biodiversity conservation; the environmental aspects of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics; and environmental challenges facing the Arctic.

It is hoped the agreement will provide new focus for addressing environmental issues, including the green economy.

UNEP16 April 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that it has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation, covering priority environmental areas including: biodiversity conservation; the environmental aspects of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics; and environmental challenges facing the Arctic. It is hoped the agreement will provide new focus for addressing environmental issues, including the green economy.

According to UNEP, the agreement commits the partners to cooperation on: developing the green economy; applying “green standards” of ecologically safe best available technologies; managing water resources, including anthropogenic impacts on marine and coastal environments; regulating the use of chemicals; utilizing and processing of wastes; implementing the Bali Strategic Plan for Technology Support and Capacity Building; working toward sustainable production and consumption; increasing public awareness on environmental protection; and implementing environmental agreements and programmes.
