Surf's Up for Going Carbon Neutral
23 January 2009: The Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane, in addition to Greenfest, an Australian music festival, Clean Up the World, an Australian community-based environmental campaign, and BalanceCarbon, an Australian carbon management company, have joined the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network (CN Net).

Speaking about these new members, Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, noted the new Australian CN Net members’ commitment to a green economy and welcomed their support to “Australia’s renewed leadership on global warming” ahead of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen in December 2009. Sydney, Australia’s biggest city, became Australia’s first carbon neutral local government in 2007. Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city, aims to become carbon neutral by 2026.
