FAO UNECE24 April 2014: Stemming in part from the 2013 ‘Rovaniemi Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy,’ Kazakhstan, with the support of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Forestry and Timber Section, will develop an action plan to increase the contribution of its forests to the development of a green economy.

Development of the action plan falls under the umbrella of the UN Development Account (UNDA) project on Sustainable Forest Management for Central Asia and the Caucasus. Kazakhstan will be the first country to pilot a plan under this framework. The project was kicked off with a training workshop, held from 14-16 April 2014, during which experts from the forest sector were informed of the green economy concept and forest policy formulation.

Other activities to be implemented through the project include additional training on wood energy and data collection, the creation of a web-based knowledge management system, and workshops on bioenergy generation from wood, data collection, and forest policy formulation. The workshops will also facilitate the sharing of lessons learned and recommendations on forests and Kazakhstan’s Green Economy Concept 2020.
