UNECEJuly 2015: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has released the third ‘Environmental Performance Review’ of Montenegro, which discusses policy-making, implementation and the financing of environmental policies and projects.

In assessing progress made since the second review in 2007, the report discusses, inter alia, waste management and the protection of water resources, as well as impacts of and measures to address climate change.

Some of the recommendations made in the report include: prioritizing implementation of environment-related legislation; integrating the green economy concept into strategic documents; and assisting local self-government authorities to implement environment-related responsibilities. The Review also suggests adopting a national strategy on climate change; and further improving conditions to invest in renewable electricity production.

The Environmental Performance Review Programme assesses progress made by individual countries in reconciling their economic and social development with environmental protection, including in meeting international commitments on environment and sustainable development.
