UNECE Holds Workshop on Methane Drainage and Use in Coal Mines

The first UNECE Workshop on Best Practice Guidance for Effective Methane Drainage and Use in Coal Mines focused on safety and technical issues relating to gas extraction and control in the underground environment.

29 October 2010: As reported in the Weekly newsletter of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the period 1-6 November 2010, the first UNECE Workshop on Best Practice Guidance for Effective Methane Drainage and Use in Coal Mines was held in Beijing, China, on 20 October 2010.

The workshop was held within the framework of the tenth International Symposium on Coalbed Methane/Coal Mine Methane, and focused on safety and technical issues relating to gas extraction and control in the underground environment. The workshop consisted of presentations made by UNECE international experts on best practice gas control, and roundtable discussions between the international panel and Chinese experts representing major coalfield areas in northern, central and western Provinces of China on drilling, outburst prevention, gas drainage and gas utilization issues. Representatives of the UNFCCC Secretariat responsible for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) also participated in the workshop. [UNECE Weekly] [Workshop website]
