UNECE-FAO Forest Newsletter Highlights Dialogues in Europe

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Forestry and Timber Section released the 32nd issue of UNited Forest, which focuses on European Forest Week, the International Day of Forests and the Tree, National Forest Policy Dialogues (NFPD's), forest information and forthcoming publications and meetings.

10 March 2013: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Forestry and Timber Section have released the 32nd issue of “UNited Forest,” which focuses on European Forest Week, the International Day of Forests, National Forest Policy Dialogues (NFPD’s), forest information and forthcoming publications and meetings.

The newsletter reports that the UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section together with the UN Office in Geneva will hold a high-level policy talk, titled “The contribution of forests to sustainability and development,” on the occasion of the International Day of Forests.

With regard to the NFPD’s, the newsletter reports on events in Poland, the Russian Federation and Switzerland, which were used to exchange knowledge on forest policy issues. In Poland, the NFPD provided a forum for discussions on long-term forest management planning for the periods up to 2030 and 2070. In Switzerland, the NFPD was organized under the theme “Forests in a Green Economy – International Perspectives and National Policies,” and in the Russian Federation, the Dialogue facilitated stakeholder participation in the revision of forest policy.

With regard to market information, the newsletter reports market predictions for 20 products in 30 countries, global data on removals, production and trade for 60 products in 40 countries, and price series on logs and other forest products starting from 1964.

The newsletter also calls attention to two forthcoming study papers titled “Forests and Economic Development: a Driver for the Green Economy in the ECE Region” and “Forests in a Green Economy for countries in Eastern Europe, Northern and Central Asia: Lviv Forum.”

Events listed in the newsletter include: the UNECE/FAO/InnovaWood Seminar on Innovation in the Forest Sector; the 35th Session of the Joint FAO/UNECE Working Party on Forest Statistics, Economics and Management; a Special Session of the ECE Timber Committee with the FAO European Forestry Commission; and Metsä2013, the Joint Session of the UNECE Timber Committee and the FAO European Forestry Commission.
