15 September 2011: A new paper published in the journal Sustainability, authored by Richard Munang and Johnson N. Nkem and titled “Using Small-Scale Adaptation Actions to Address the Food Crisis in the Horn of Africa: Going Beyond Food Aid and Cash Transfers,” showcases lessons learned from the Climate Change Adaptation and Development Programme (CC DARE), which was jointly implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The authors highlight that rapid, small-scale and flexible actions can provide the correct incentives and preparedness for addressing the food crisis in the region.

The drought in the region has led to the worst food crisis of the 21st century, which has also led to a weakened response capacity and diminished prospects for future water and food security. Lessons learned from the projects have shown that small-scale innovative adaptation measures using democratic approaches have aided in building resilience and enabling increased food security against the droughts in the region.
