UNDP18 June 2012: In an Opinion piece published in the Korea Joongang Daily, Anne-Isabelle Degryse-Blateau, Director of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Seoul Policy Centre, reiterates the need for global cooperation on a new development framework.

Noting economic challenges in the West, the rise of Asia and the increasing role of foundations and the private sector in development, Degryse-Blateau stresses the need for broad development partnerships to promote poverty reduction and sustainable development.

She highlights the role the Republic of Korea can play in brokering new partnerships, such as the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation. This Partnership was endorsed by participants at the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness held in Busan, Republic of Korea, in 2011. With the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expiring in 2015, and on the occasion of the consultation process to create a new development framework, this Forum represented an opportunity for countries to share their views and make recommendations on this new framework. Forum participants included the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and emerging countries, developing countries, traditional donors, the private sector, and civil society.
