24 May 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released the third issue of its Climate Change Adaptation Bulletin. The newsletter features articles on: support to 22 least developed countries (LDCs); the Africa Adaptation Programme, financed by the Government of Japan and implemented in 20 countries; and country updates on the preparation and implementation of National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) with preparatory work expected to start in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Chad and Togo. The Bulletin notes that UNDP has supported 31 countries with development of a NAPA, with 29 being completed and currently under implementation. The Bulletin provides an update on the status of completion of NAPAs in Nepal and Timor-Leste in 2010, noting that in both countries the process was consultative involving a variety of stakeholders.
The newsletter also describes the activities under the Africa Adaptation Programme (AAP), established under the Japan-UNDP Joint Framework for Building Partnership to Address Climate Change in Africa. The AAP is financially supporting countries to mainstream climate change risks and opportunities into national development processes by developing capacities at the country level to identify, design and implement adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) programmes.
The issue also provides the latest information on UNDP’s support to countries on climate change adaptation at the national, sub-national and community-levels. It includes updates on a range of topics including the status of ongoing projects, new project approvals, performance indicators, project impacts and results, policy and mainstreaming work.
