UNDP Promotes Low-Carbon Lifestyle at Shanghai Expo
story highlights

UNDP co-hosts an event on China's Low Carbon Future, which aims to raise awareness about low-carbon living and sustainable alternatives among young people.

17 October 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Jiefang Daily Group, a major Chinese media company, co-hosted an event on “China’s Low Carbon Future: A Dialogue on Green City and Green Life,” at the ongoing Shanghai Expo.

The event brought together over 600 people, including volunteers and students, and aimed to raise awareness about low-carbon living and sustainable alternatives among young people. In her opening address, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark highlighted the economic and social development progress achieved by China, which has already met many of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is on-track to meet others, including its actions on low-carbon development. A comic book, focusing on low-carbon lifestyles that is part of an environmental awareness initiative by UNDP China, was launched during the event. The book, which is expected to be distributed in primary and middle schools around the country, is China’s first bilingual cartoon on climate change and low-carbon lifestyles.

Earlier this year, UNDP and the Chinese Government released the 2010 China Human Development Report that estimates that nearly 400 million rural Chinese will migrate into urban areas over the next two decades, significantly increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
