UNDP8 March 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) is promoting the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve local governments’ accountability, and to facilitate equitable and sustainable development through better service delivery in local communities, such as improved access to water and sanitation. In collaboration with the municipality of Chefchaoaun, UNDP recently organized a workshop in Chefchaoaun, Morocco, bringing together representatives from Mauritania, Senegal, Tunisia, Lebanon and Gabon to learn about the city’s work in improving its human resources and document management systems.

These efforts are part of UNDP’s Information Society Initiative for the Mediterranean (ISI@MED initiative), a partnership with the Centre for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) in Marseille. Through this initiative, the city of Malaga, Spain, is collaborating with the city of Tripoli, Lebanon, to help it build a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map out its physical infrastructure, including streets, electrical grids, water delivery systems and sewage pipes.
