31 July 2008: As part of the efforts to make the Beijing
Olympics environmentally friendly, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) is
providing four electric buses for use during the Games.
The vehicles will be part of a fleet of 50 that will
transport athletes between the Olympic Village and the sports venues. Subinay
Nandy, UNDP Country Director, explained that UNDP’s contribution aimed not only
to help reduce the Olympics’ carbon footprint, but also to raise awareness
among the general public on the options for sustainable public transport in
China. The country’s oil-dependent transport sector is projected to be a major
source of emissions in the near future. After the Olympics, the four buses will
become part of Beijing’s general public transport system. [UN
