UNDP Opens Centre to Promote Role of Business in Poverty Reduction

UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark inaugurated the International Centre for Private Sector in Development in Istanbul, Turkey, which aims to encourage the engagement of the private sector in anti-poverty efforts by promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development.

11 March 2011: The Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark, inaugurated the International Centre for Private Sector in Development on 11 March 2011, in Istanbul, Turkey. The Centre aims to encourage the engagement of the private sector in anti-poverty efforts by promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Clark said the Centre will help connect local, national, and global actors, and identify approaches to creating value for business and advancing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). She noted that many companies are making the decision to purchase locally in order to nurture small businesses and generate jobs and livelihoods in the community.

During her official visit, the Administrator signed a partnership agreement with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to support global poverty reduction. [UNDP Press Release] [UN News Centre]
