story highlights

UNDP and the Government of Liberia hosted a two-day consultation on how development can be sustainable in post-conflict countries.

Liberia is currently developing a framework to promote sustainable development in a post-conflict country, which will be presented at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

RIO+202 December 2011: A two-day consultation workshop was held to address how development can be sustainable in post-conflict settings. It aimed to build the capacity of governments and stakeholders to utilize sustainable development principles in national policy making in post-conflict countries. The workshop was attended by government officials and development officers from 15 post-conflict countries.

Organized by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia, with support from other UN agencies, the workshop took place from 30 November-1 December 2011, in Paynesville City, Liberia.

Opening the event, EPA’s Deputy Executive Director noted that Liberia was selected among a few pilot countries to present a concept document that would provide the framework for promoting sustainable development in a post-conflict nation. The document is expected to be used by the delegation of Liberia to represent other post-conflict countries at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). [Rio+20 News]
