The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have launched an e-discussion on jobs and livelihoods as part of the Global Consultation on Growth and Employment in the post-2015 development agenda.

Three additional e-discussions will be held on: development-led globalization; environmental sustainability and growth; and growth, diversification and structural transformation.

11 January 2013: Online discussions on growth and employment have been launched on the World We Want 2015 website, as part of the Global Consultation on Growth and Employment for the post-2015 development agenda. The e-discussions, running in January and February 2013, aim to broaden discussion in four areas: development-led globalization; environmental sustainability and growth; growth, diversification and structural transformation; and jobs and livelihoods.

The global consultations on growth and employment are being supported by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The global thematic discussion on Growth and Employment was initiated in May 2012, when UNDP and ILO organized a Consultation on Growth and Employment in Tokyo, Japan, with support from the Government of Japan. Recommendations included: placing growth and jobs at the center of the development agenda; promoting regulations and training systems to help people who are left out of labour markets; ensuring space for the development of national policies while also supporting collaboration on global issues; increasing agricultural productivity through investments in access to credit, extension services, rural infrastructure and technology; linking natural resource extraction to employment generation; implementing social protection schemes; and lessening the impact of transitions to low-carbon growth. These discussions were continued at a briefing in New York, US, on 13 December 2012.

The e-discussion on jobs and livelihoods discussion takes place from 11 January-8 February 2013, and will be moderated by Aurelio Parisotto, ILO senior economist, and Rizwanul Islam, an employment economist. The growth, diversification and structural transformation e-discussion runs from 18 January-15 February 2013. Development-led globalization will be held from 25 January-22 February 2013. Environmental sustainability and growth will take place from 31 January-28 February 2013.

This global thematic consultation is one of 11 being conducted by the UN Development Group (UNDG) on the post-2015 development agenda.
