story highlights

Rebeca Grynspan, UNDP Associate Administrator, outlined priorities for the Rio+20 agenda focused on advancing progress on sustainable development, underlining that development is about "green, inclusive and resilient" people-centered growth.

UNDP22 March 2012: In an article titled “On the road to Rio: Building a sustainable future we all want,” Rebeca Grynspan, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Associate Administrator, outlined priorities for the agenda of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), focusing on ideas for advancing progress in sustainable development.

In the article, Grynspan noted that development is not simply about economic growth, but about people-centered growth that is “green, inclusive and resilient.” She outlined seven priorities for the Rio+20 agenda, as follows: ensuring inclusive dialogue, engaging diverse stakeholders and actors; integrating the environmental, social, and economic dimensions in the action plan; building fair, effective and responsive institutions; mobilizing global and local resources to finance the transition to low-carbon societies; increasing South-South and triangular cooperation, especially with regards to technological innovation; achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); and establishing new measures, indices and indicators to reflect “more holistically” the value of human development and the environment.

Grynspan concluded by inviting views on priorities for the Rio+20 agenda. Her article is part of the “Our Perspectives” online blog series, an initiative of UNDP featuring a series of articles on the UNDP website. [UNDP Press Release]
