21 January 2011: UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark visited the Rosh Protected Area Community, in the island of Socotra off the coast of Yemen, to present the Equator Initiative prize. The Rosh Community was among the 25 winners of the 2010 Equator Prize but was unable to send a representative to the Awards Ceremony in September 2010.

Socotra is a World Heritage site, with an estimated 825 plant species as well as endemic reptiles and rich marine life. The Rosh Community aims to address the decrease in fisheries production by generating new jobs through a benefit-sharing enterprise, and to promote the use of solar panel technology and sustainable water management techniques.

The Equator Initiative supports local and indigenous efforts in biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. The Equator Prize 2010 Award Ceremony was held during the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) 2010 Review Summit in September 2010 and recognized 25 community projects for their efforts in promoting conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
