UNDP Administrator Discusses Relevance of Rio+20 for Sustainable Development
story highlights

UNDP Administrator Helen Clark recognizes that the over 700 formal commitments registered at Rio+20 form one of the Conference's most significant outcomes.

Rather than waiting on action by governments or UN Member States, she says, subnational governments, businesses, and civil society have illustrated the role of diverse leaders in accelerating sustainable development across economic and social sectors.

UNDP21 August 2012: In the latest “Our Perspective” piece, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark writes that the challenge following the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) is to advance economic, environmental and social objectives simultaneously, through integrated policy-making. She notes that the Rio+20 outcome document recognizes the linkages between economic development and environmental protection, and places equal emphasis on the social dimensions of sustainable development.

Clark recognizes over 700 formal commitments registered at Rio+20 as one of the Conference’s most significant outcomes. Rather than waiting on action by governments or UN Member States, she says, subnational governments, businesses, and civil society have illustrated the role of diverse leaders in accelerating sustainable development across economic and social sectors. Clark also highlights the role of social media in engaging citizens in sustainable development, referencing the fact that over 60,000 people around the world voted for specific sustainable development actions through the “Rio Dialogues.” [Our Perspective]
