26 March 2012: Speaking on the occasion of World Social Work Day, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark called for cooperation among those who share the objectives of addressing the root causes of poverty, oppression and inequality and creating a “more socially-just and fair world which we will be proud to leave to future generations.”

Clark was speaking at the 29th Annual Social Work Day, celebrated on 26 March 2012, at the UN Headquarters in New York, US, on the theme, “Partnering with the United Nations: The Social Work and Social Development Global Agenda.” Clark accepted the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development on behalf of the UN, noting that its vision mirrors many of the UN’s goals, rights and agreements, as well as the mandates of its agencies, funds and programmes. She highlighted that the social work profession has been at the forefront of promoting human rights and supporting people to realize their full potential, and outlined some of the commitments in the Global Agenda, including: promoting social and economic equalities; promoting the dignity and worth of peoples; working towards environmental sustainability; strengthening recognition of the importance of human relationships. Clark concluded that for each of these commitments, there is scope for enhanced partnerships between social workers and the UN. [UNDP Press Release]
