UNDG25 September 2015: On the margins of the UN Sustainable Development Summit, the UN Development Group (UNDG) pledged its collaboration with all Member States to eliminate bottlenecks, provide new direction and offer the necessary coordination to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recalled the UNDG-led global dialogues that had conveyed the world’s ideas and expectations, and said the 2030 Agenda embraces the principles of participation, inclusion, and partnerships, which emerged from these consultations.

The UNDG event, titled ‘Global Conversation to Global Action: Making the SDGs Work,’ took place on 25 September 2015, in New York, US.

Noting that the Agenda’s preamble states that it will be implemented by “all countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership,” Ban underscored that the 2030 Agenda’s adoption, earlier in the day on 25 September, means “we have listened to your views. All your governments have heard you. This 2030 Agenda is for you; it is for everyone, everywhere.” The Secretary-General further urged participants to “claim it, demand that commitments are made and promises kept, be part of this global call to action.”

Helen Clark, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, noted that Member States have high expectations for support from the UN development system in implementing the new Agenda. She said UNDG has developed a common approach to supporting countries in implementation, called ‘MAPS:’ Mainstreaming, Acceleration, and Policy Support. “Mainstreaming,” she said, refers to the support UNDG can give governments to incorporate the agenda in national and local strategies, plans, and budgets, strengthen data systems, and sensitize national stakeholders about the new agenda. “Acceleration” refers to identifying the obstacles and bottlenecks in making progress on goals and targets, and to identifying the actions that could speed up progress on multiple targets at the same time. Finally, “policy support” encompasses co-ordinated and demand-driven advice, Clark explained.

She added that the UN Millennium Campaign will evolve into a new campaign for popularizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in every country, bringing stakeholders together to support implementation, and sponsoring citizen-driven processes to track progress.

UNDG unites the UN funds, programmes, specialized agencies, departments, and offices that play a role in global development. [UN Press Release] [UN Secretary-General Remarks] [UNDP Administrator Remarks]
