UNCSD Secretariat Publishes Second Issue of Rio20: Making it Happen
story highlights

The second issue of “Rio20: Making it Happen” highlights recent events related to the themes of the Conference, interagency collaboration on preparations, a briefing to major groups, and other developments.

22 December 2010: The second issue of the biweekly newsletter of the UNCSD Secretariat, titled “Rio20: Making it Happen,” was published on 22 December 2010.

The newsletter highlights side events organized by UNEP and others in Cancun, Mexico, under the UNCSD theme “Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication,” as well as a briefing on recent intergovernmental consultations on International Environment Governance (IEG), which corresponds to the other UNCSD theme, “Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development.”

The newsletter notes that the UNCSD Secretariat and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) agreed to draft a proposal to potential donors for ensuring that the Resident Coordinator System and UN country teams support national preparations for UNCSD (Rio+20), and a proposal to the UN Development Group (UNDG) on setting up a new UNDG Task Team on UNCSD.

On major groups’ participation in UNCSD, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) held a workshop with civil society on Population and Rio+20 in December, during which the UNCSD Secretariat briefed participants on preparations for the Conference.

Finally, the second issue reiterates that the two UNCSD Executive Coordinators, Elizabeth Thompson (Barbados) and Brice Lalonde (France), were appointed and will support the Conference Secretary-General in overseeing the preparation and organization of the Conference. [The Newsletter]
