UNAIDS23 September 2013: A report of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) finds that new HIV infections have reduced by 52% since 2001 and many more people have access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, placing the world community on course to achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on HIV/AIDS.

The UNAIDS publication, ‘UNAIDS report on the global AIDS epidemic 2013,’ highlights that besides the reduction in new HIV infections, AIDS-related deaths have fallen and access to ARV treatment has expanded by 20% in low and middle-income countries.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé said the 2015 target of 15 million people on HIV treatment will be met, and called for efforts to go beyond the target to ensure that no one is left behind. [Publication: UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic 2013] [UNAIDS Press Release]
