In its recently launched report, the UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) recognizes that gender equality and women's empowerment are fundamental to sustainable development.
UN Women had worked with the Panel to ensure that the report reflected gender equality and women's empowerment issues.
9 February 2012: UN Women has highlighted that the report of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) makes gender equality and women’s empowerment a central theme. UN Women, which supported the Panel to ensure it reflected gender and women’s issues, notes that the report offers three recommendations addressing gender inequality, including prioritizing women as beneficiaries.
The report, titled “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing,” calls for: accelerating commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment; removing barriers to productive resources; and supporting the rise of women leaders across sectors. The recommendations also support access to quality and affordable family planning and other sexual and reproductive rights and health services, as well as educational opportunities, especially those most relevant to a sustainable economy. The report stresses that persistent gender inequality must be addressed “as part of any serious shift towards sustainable development.”
