While the grants portfolio focuses on implementing Goal 5 on gender equality, the funds also will contribute to several other SDGs that relate to women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Twenty-four programmes in 28 countries of Asia, Africa, the Arab region and Latin America and the Caribbean have received the funds, issued through a small grants programme administered by the FGE.

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said the grants will contribute to implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development “in the most practical way possible.”

The programmes funded relate to: enhancing women’s participation in politics and peacebuilding; supporting women entrepreneurs and women farmers; promoting labor rights and social protection of women workers; and many other areas.

The FGE was launched in 2009, supported by the Governments of Switzerland and Germany, the Tupperware company, and the Angelica Fuentes Foundation, among other donors. To date, the FGE has awarded US$64 million in grants to 120 programmes in 80 countries. [UN Women Press Release] [Fund for Gender Equality]
